If you have an 8800GT. In most games you can just crank all settings to it's maximum.
It depends what game you play to get the best quality, performance and gameplay.

1200x800 resolution is the best for a widescreen monitor. 720x480 is good but it totally changes the graphics.
Most people own 22" monitors. If you have a good graphics card then set your resolution to 1650x1050 which is best suited for 22" monitors.
There's resolutions like 1920x1200 for 24"+ monitors but you would need a good comp right?

I would also put the Bloom/Glow effect on. It makes the graphics come to life.
To eliminate "jaggies" (jagged edges on objects, figures etc.) set your anti-alialising to 2x.
4x+ wouldn't make a HUGE difference but you can slightly see the effect.

Anti-Alialising, Glow and the resolution are main settings I look at when I play a game.

For the best gaming experience I would recommend buying an Alienware PC/laptop. You won't regret your investment ;)
